Instead of using the default login keychain, 1Password uses the OS X Keychain Services API to create a brand new keychain called "1Password". You can see all your keychains in Apple's Keychain Access application.

By using a separate keychain you are able to configure separate security rules and keep your data separate from other applications. Each keychain can have its own Autolock period, lock on sleep, and .Mac synchronization rules.
